🤔 How Does This Tool Work?

The Percentage Change Calculator uses this formula:

% Change = ((New Value − Old Value) ÷ |Old Value|) × 100

A positive result means an increase. A negative result means a decrease.

Examples:

  • Salary: 40,000 → 48,000 = +20% increase
  • Weight: 80 kg → 72 kg = −10% decrease
  • Price: 1,500 → 1,200 = −20% decrease
  • Students: 200 → 250 = +25% increase

The calculator shows both the percentage and a plain-language description of what the change means.

❓ FAQ
How do I calculate percentage increase?
Formula: ((New Value − Old Value) ÷ Old Value) × 100. Example: price went from 200 to 250: ((250−200) ÷ 200) × 100 = 25% increase. Our calculator shows this instantly!
How do I calculate percentage decrease?
Same formula — if the result is negative, it is a decrease. Example: price went from 200 to 150: ((150−200) ÷ 200) × 100 = −25% (25% decrease).
What is the difference between percentage and percentage points?
If interest rates go from 5% to 8%, that is a 3 percentage point increase. But as a percentage change, the rate increased by 60% (because 3 is 60% of 5). These are very different things — it is a common source of confusion in the media!
Can I calculate percentage change for negative numbers?
Yes, our calculator handles negative starting values. For example, if a temperature changed from −10 to −5 degrees, that is a 50% increase (it became 50% less negative).
Why would I need to know percentage change?
Percentage change is used everywhere: comparing prices over time, analysing salary increases, tracking weight loss progress, understanding business growth, interpreting news about economic changes, and much more.
